Case Study: Roedean School Case Study

Sand-dressed Artificial Turf Pitch for Hockey

Tarmacadam Tennis & Netball Courts

Natural Grass Pitch

Car Park & Roadway

Roedean School enjoys a wonderful cliff-top location within the South Downs National Park on the outskirts of Brighton. Given this setting and the proximity of a listed building, the development of new external sports facilities demanded great sensitivity in design and construction to minimise any visual impact on the local environment.

These considerations had of course to be balanced with the imperative of creating an outstanding and highly practical asset for the school, and meet the demands of the significant growth in pupil numbers.

S&C Slatter, working closely with the School and planning authorities, conceived and completed an innovative engineering solution with an extensive cut and fill operation and a series of retaining walls to create new construction footprints inset and modelled unobtrusively into the Sussex hillside.

The new FIH National Performance Standard certified hockey facility has a FieldTurf Hockey Gold Elite artificial turf playing surface whilst the refurbished tennis court complex is colour coated with a water-based polyurethane over tarmacadam.

Car parking provision has been greatly enhanced by the introduction of a formal 48-space tarmacadam car park and access road from which a network of pathways and transitions link all the site elements.

The whole contract process was delivered by the company’s in-house Pre-Construction and Engineering teams with Contracts Manager Peter Fowler responsible for on-plan performance.
